This is a review of Godrej Expert Rich Creme Hair Colour with Aloe Proteins. I tried this hair color in shade 4.00 Natural Brown, but the ingredient list for both Natural Brown 4.00 and Natural Black 1.00 shades is identical.

So far I have been using L'Oreal Excellence Creme Permanent Hair Color (Shade 4.0) for a long time now and have survived one really bad scalp allergy last year. One of the readers requested for a review of this Godrej hair color and I had never thought I would try it. It felt that at INR 30, there surely would be some compromise on the quality. How can they sell it so cheap when other brands are selling these hair colors at a very high price?
Recently I saw Godrej Expert Rich Creme Hair Colour in Shades Natural Brown 4.00 and Natural Black 1.00 at the shop near my house. I decided to go for the Natural Brown shade, as Black looks very unnatural and stark on my already black natural hair. I read the ingredient list and thought it would be mild, since it contains resorcinol.

Last week I finally applied this hair color in shade Natural Brown 4.00.
THE PACKAGING:
Godrej Rich Creme Hair Colour pack contains two sachets: One Developer sachet and One creme colorant. There are no gloves, no conditioner, no applicator comb or brush and no fancy packing, which is why they are able to give it to you at such an affordable price of INR 30 only. Each pack is marked where to cut open. You just need to mix the two and apply.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH GODREJ EXPERT RICH CREME HAIR COLOUR
People who want to go for a full head and full hair-length coverage would need more than one pack of this hair color. For touch up and for application on just the head, or for short-haired people, one pack is sufficient.
Just like other no-ammonia brands, Godrej Expert Rich Creme Hair Colour also contains resorcinol. So there were no stingy fumes. It had a very very faint rose fragrance, which I liked. I touched up the small area with gray roots and was still left with a lot of mixture. I applied to some more areas on the head and within minutes, while I was still applying this hair color, I felt a high-heat sensation in my scalp.
I discarded the remaining 40% mixture in the bowl under running water and quickly wrapped up. At exact 30 minutes, I went for a hair wash. Normally I do not shampoo for at least 3 days after coloring my hair, but this time I shampooed with my Organic Surge Color Protect Shampoo and Conditioner in the hope to reduce the inflammation in my scalp. But my plight did not end here.
Once out of the shower, I started feeling nausea and giddiness. The heat sensation in my scalp aggravated further. It was not a burning sensation but as if very intense heat waves were coming out of my scalp. I tried lying down but the giddiness became worse. For 2 hours, my condition was really bad. After that the giddiness subsided slowly but the high-heat sensation in the scalp remained for more than 24 hours.
There was some hair fall on the day I colored my hair and it alarmed me. But after that my hair did not suffer any unnatural hair fall. My hair are very soft and silky. The Natural Brown shade came out a rusty golden color on my grays and still does not look odd. The color also looks very natural on my remaining hair, not like the even coverage I get with L'Oreal Excellence Cream.
GODREJ RICH CREME HAIR COLOUR INGREDIENTS:
THE VERDICT:
On the packet, it says it is a Type 3 colorant (Permanent Hair Color), but from my experience, it is a Type 2 hair colorant (Demi-permanent hair color) because:
- It contains resorcinol and not ammonia
- It gave a more natural and uneven coverage which looks different from the way L'Oreal colors all my hair evenly
- I feel that my color won't stay long and will wash out within a month or so.

I am never ever going to try any Godrej hair colour again. I had the same heated scalp experience with Radico Italiano hair color, which also contains resorcinol, though I did not experience such giddiness or nausea with Radico Italiano.
Even though my hair look soft, beautiful and more natural, I cannot forget the horrible experience I had right after coloring my hair with Godrej Rich Creme Hair Color. I felt very guilty as if I gave myself a good chemical treat. Even with Ammonia based hair colors, I have never had any giddiness or nausea. It is possible that my skin does not tolerate resorcinol.
The heated scalp sensation could be due to resorcinol, but I think the giddiness and nausea were most likely caused by a higher P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) content as compared to L'Oreal Excellence Creme. The PPD content in L'Oreal Excellence Creme ready to use mixture is not more than 0.5% but in Godrej Expert Rich Creme Hair Color, the PPD content is double than that, that is, not more than 1% in ready to use mixture. I have deleted the additional pictures of the Radico Italiano pack, so cannot confirm the PPD content in that.
If 1% PPD made my condition this bad, I wonder about Super Vasmol Kesh Kala which contains 4% PPD.
This experience has really caused an aversion in my heart towards chemical hair colors. Please know that what suits me may or may not suit you and what suits you may or may not suit me. We all have different bodies and different reactions to things. I am brought up in natural surroundings and my body does not like much chemicals, makeup or medicines. So my body's reaction to this hair color was quite strong.
You can try this hair color at your own risk and try only if you have used a resorcinol based hair color before with no such side effects. If you have any kind of skin problems on your scalp, please avoid chemical hair colors till your scalp gets healthy again.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the link Tej, I found it really good. It will be helpful for people who are planning to color their hair or going to try a new brand. In my case, I have been coloring for 9 years and also know thoroughly about the ingredients by now. I did not do a strand test because I had used a resorcinol based color before and did not have any allergy. Also, I used Godrej rich creme only for root touch ups, and during that, the color almost always ends up on the scalp. Even with this one, my hair have come out beautiful, but I guess it is the PPD that caused the nausea.
DeleteAnd regarding getting it done at a salon, may be you don't know, but most people cannot afford it in terms of time and money. I receive a lot of emails about problems arising from getting it done at a salon because they will almost always tell you to go for a full head application, no matter if you have only a few gray hair strands. This spoils the quality of the remaining hair :( Istn't it great you can get yours done from a salon without having to worry much? :) I am now fine dear, thank you!

Rest of the people with a good amount of grays prefer to go to saloons initially and later do at home since saloons charge a lot here too. I have seen less people use L'Oreal Excellence as it is costlier than other brands.

ReplyDeleteHi gaganpreet... great information that u r sharing... i am 27 yrs old... i had greys but they were not so prominant so i used henna on my hair.. its been 2 months that i have been blessed with a lovely angel... during preg my greys increased and now i cant leave my hair open as they show up badly.. henna is temporary and needs to be applied every 15 days... so i ws wondering if i shud start colouring but after reading ur reviews i am sceptic abt hair colouring...please suggest me the safest alternative to cover greys..
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on bringing a new part of you to life :) I understand at the present moment you are still recovering and even though you may not feel like yourself for almost a year, you still need to look good to motivate yourself and combat the sleepless nights. The safest way to cover grays is Henna and Indigo (another leaf powder that gives almost black color to hair), which is going to be tedious at this stage. You can go for a temporary hair color like L'Oreal casting creme and once you feel more strength and life starts getting back to normal, you can think about going back to Henna, but with Indigo this time. I will post more information on the blog in the coming months. So stay tuned. Casting creme is not completely safe and would last some 20+ hair washes but it won't be that risky to have it done once in 30-40 days.
DeleteI guess it is to each his own. I have been colouring my hair for many years and am at present using Godrej Rich Creme Expert. The best part of it for me is that it is ammonia free. I have had no unpleasant reaction. ( For others would suggest a spot sensitivity check and on the slightest unpleasant experience to wash off quickly with cool water.)Have found the brown shades to be too dark. Covering is temporary but that is Ok because in any case new growth means dye has to be applied every fortnight or so.

Hello Jag, thanks for sharing your experience. You are right and I have already acknowledged what suits me may or may not suit others. But I have a high number of negative experiences shared by users through email, for this particular brand. It's good to know it suits you. It is Ammonia free but NOT chemical free. It has resorcinol which may not suit many people, despite there being no unpleasant smell. My mother had been using Godrej for many years and had continuous complaints of headache, weekened nerves and heavy hair fall, which it took her too long to link up to her hair color. Coloring every fortnight is too frequent I feel. I am already experiment with natural hair coloring with Henna and Indigo. Will share my results within a month or so if you are interested.
DeleteI also use the Godrej Rich Crème Expert and have no issues. My hair is really growing because I cut it about a year ago. I cover my grey front every two weeks because of the new growth and my entire end every 7 weeks. It seems to work best for me than any other I have tried.

You can read my article under Hair Care section, where I have explained the difference in these colors. This will help you decide which color to go for. ReplyDeleteYou can start with a demi permanent hair color like L'Oreal Casting Creme and see how effective it is for gray coverage. For 30% gray, you should not go for a permanent hair color directly (Read my article on Permanent/demi permanent hair colors under Hair Care section to understand the difference and what I mean). Most other brands in the market have a higher PPD content. Please do a strand test first and don't go for a full head application. You can apply at home and no need to go to a saloon as the saloon guys will convince you for a full head application with a permanent color which may increase your grays over time. For demi-permanent hair colors, you will need to choose a color close to or darker than your current natural hair shade, lighter colors won't work. Also, switch to a non-SLS shampoo when you start coloring otherwise hair quality will degrade over time. For further help, become a member and then you can email me.

Then I started applying Henna with curd for about 5 years. But it makes the white hair turn dark reddish and does not suit to the rest of my hair. recently i started using Garnier burgandy. After applying it looks good, but everytime i was my hair after application or even after shampoo I loose almost 50 to 70 strands of hair. I am not going to use Godrej, but using Garnier is safe? I need to use colors for couple of more years (maybe until 36). I have more than 60% grey hair all over my head, so full application is the only option. Do you have any suggestions? DeleteHi Sai, when you switch from color to Henna or vice versa without giving proper gap, hair fall is bound to happen. Please read my relevant article under 'Hair Care' section. 5 years is a long period and there is loads on Henna in your hair. So it is going to be a long adaptation period for your hair and color will not lock in properly till Henna is there. Doing only root touch ups and letting the Hennaed hair grow out is one option for you. It is okay to look odd for a few weeks than lose your hair. Many people who have written to me so far are allergic to Garnier and it had created small bald patches in my hair many years ago when I used to use it.

DeleteThe hair colors you are using are high in PPD, which some people's scalp cannot tolerate. It also depends on how often you are coloring and you technique of applying the color.
It is normal to have gray hair after 25. Doctor will give supplements but they can't turn gray hair back to black.
I understand L'Oreal is costly, but it is milder than these colors. Go for casting creme as 25% is still okay. Color only the gray roots. Check the developer and color ratio, mostly it is 3:2 so mix accordingly. Use one packet for 5-6 applications so it becomes cost effective.
Black or brown colored chemical henna is dangerous to health with high amounts of PPD. I don't recommend that.

There is natural henna and indigo which give dark brown color and there is a proper method of using that. If you want to shift to that, you will need to give a gap of 1-2 months without using any hair color.

My age is 60 years and I had been using natural heena to cover my semi grey hair since the age of 30 years and upto the age of 50 years when I converted to Garnier No.5 (Light brown). I preferred brown colour as this colour suits my very fair skin.Black colour gives a very odd look. Due to the presence of Ammonia and its pungent smell I always wanted to go for Ammonia Free colourant. Just a week ago I came to know about Godrej Expert hair colour and I used it for the first time. Contrary to your experience I did not feel any kind of burning sensation on my head. What I felt negative about this colour is (1) It was, though, a natural brown colour but my hair turned jet black instead of natural brown. (2) I rinsed the hair with plain water thoroughly but the effect of chemicals did not go away. I felt it after I rubbed my eyes (the next day) and felt itching in my eyes. I guess I might have touched my hair in routine and after rubbing my eyes the impression of chemicals that my fingers carried might be responsible for burning eye sensation. Then I had to wash my head with shampoo to drain away the remaining chemicals from my hair.

Dear Sir, thanks a ton for this first-hand feedback. I completely agree what does not suit me, may suit other users. I have found that ammonia-free hair colors, which generally contain resorcinol (as a substitute to ammonia) cause a high-heat sensation on my scalp, while ammonia is still bearable to me.
DeleteBut there's another user, who developed a sever boil at the back of his neck the next day after using this and he had to get proper medication for it.
Since you have mentioned your natural hair color is brown, have you ever considered trying Indigo with Henna. It would actually give you a brown color in an all-natural way. If you read this, do let me know and I will be happy to share more details.
Hi Gagan..I am 24 yrs old and around 30% of my hair is gray. My hairs started greying since I was 16. Since then i've used both Henna and Color but never on regular basis. Its like am scared applying color after every 20-25 days. So I end up doing it once in 2 months or so. But the problem is i am never satisfied with the result. I recently colored my hair 4 days back..and I can still see white roots. . Please tell me how can i keep color on my hair for long.I generally use Streax(Dark Brown) with Dove conditioner. I dont want to switch to Henna because i dont like that orange tinge.

You can also get 100% gray coverage with Henna and Indigo and achieve a natural black color. But it lasts mainly a couple of weeks or so.
Doesnt the company (godrej) mind sharing of yur angst so publicly? However, i think it is a very rave & candid review. But it still leaves one question unanswered. After all, which is that hair color by which most of the consumers are satisfied most of the times?

DeleteAll chemical colors will react to the scalp at some point in time on regular use. You cannot stop that but can definitely take measures to delay that point. These practices are ideally supposed to be taken up and done by a trained professional. Most people color their hair at home and many times it is user error and lack of proper knowledge that leads to problems at quite an early stage. Natural colors like Henna and indigo are 100% safe but don't last very long. So there is no such color which can satisfy consumers for ever. The society needs a mindshift in terms of accepting that graying at an early age is a natural phenomenon these days and it is 'cool' to sport your grays rather than making it such an important point in a person's overall personality.

Hi Bindhu, did you ever try heating up the Henna before applying. Years ago Henna was intolerable on my scalp due to its cooling sensation but now I add coffee to it and it does not feel cold. Do let me know if you ever tried heating up the paste.
DeleteSince you are shifting to chemical colors, there may initially be some hair fall. Also, please read the article under Hair Care section of this blog, where I have discussed about applying Hair color on Hennaed hair and vice versa. Any color you choose will initially not stick for long and may wash out easily. So expect a shift period of around 6 months.
If you have more than 60% grays then go for L'Oreal Excellence Creme. You can also first do a patch test with the Godrej color you have bought and see if it suits you. Don't go for Garnier, it will damage scalp and hair. If you go for L'Oreal, be sure to mix the developer and cream in 3:2 ratio and not 50-50. I can't say which one particular brand of hair color is good. All are chemical based and should best be touched up only with full head application only once in 6-7 months or so.

ReplyDeleteAs for Godrej extreme Rich Creme Hair Colour, I have been using both Natural black and dark brown shades for more than 1 + year without any problems that you encountered. So I just think that you are allergic to one of the ingredients and experienc may vary from person to person.
I didn't know about differences between diff- permenant (semi, demi) etc. So thanks for explaining that in detail.
I earlier used L'oreal, (both excellence and their ammonia-free variety), Revlon etc. My main problem with L'Oreal is they dont give markings if I want to go for only touch up and dont need to use full product at one go!
In India it is quite common (even in parlors) that they take approx quantities of colorant and developer and mix to save the product for 2nd use. I was a bit wary of that and also price conscious as it is expensive and if I go by instructions I have to use the full product unnecessarily and discard the remaining.
Hence I found Godrej's approach convenient. I didnt go for garnier as it is not ammonia-free.
Thanks to you again. I didn't know in detail that ammonia-free colors use resorcinol. I had thought ammonia-free colors use Hydrogen peroxide. However I dont know which one is less harmful - ammonia or resorcinol. What I know is ammonia deep penetrates hair so hair color enters more effectively. (I could be wrong)
I wont say I am completely satisfied with Godrej also as I would like to hair-color to stay longer.
The place I stay is very cold almost throught the year. So heena is ruled out for me as I catch cold very fast. Also I found heena to be messy in colder environments and also leads to hairfall because of weight. Also hair becomes very dry. So I have no aletrnative to go for hair color.
Alas for all of us search for perfct haircolor is like a mirage!

DeleteYou are right, I may be allergic to resorcinol though the experience while application was 'silent' as opposed to stingy fumes of ammonia. But I have also tried Radico Italiano which contains resorcinol and had the same heat sensation on scalp, though it was more intense in case of Godrej. I am very particular about what goes on my body and but a lot of people were emailing and asking for a review for this and after checking the ingredient list, I thought it would be fine to go with. But you know this experience proved a blessing in disguise. Had I not used Godrej rich creme, I would never have felt so strongly against chemical hair colors or would have explored natural hair colors. So this incident became a life-changing moment for me, a blessing in disguise :)
Coming to markings, I saw them first on Garnier (my mom used to use Garnier a few years ago). And I made markings on the L'Oreal tube and developer with a marker :) But I noticed that it didn't help because when you squeeze the tube to dispense the creme, some quantity in the upper marked segments is also pushed 'down' in the first marking. So even that becomes inaccurate. Though it works in case of liquid developer as you can pour a little and then put the bottle down for the liquid to settle and check how much up or near the mark it is and take out the exact quantity up to the mark. If you put more developer, the color will fade very soon and if you use less, the paste will burn on the scalp. So adding approximate quantity and making a toothpaste consistency paste helps. I used to measure the developer and take the paste by approximation.
To answer your question, resorcinol is milder than ammonia but to get more color though, more amount of resorcinol is added as compared to ammonia so the damage amounts to almost the same. L'Oreal etc contain both. And yes, hydrogen peroxide is there along with ammonia and resorcinol. The weight thing with Henna, well I faced it only this time because I had tried something new this time and the quantity of paste became double. Otherwise I don't always apply paste to the whole hair length, mostly do the head part and full hair only once in a while. I used to face the cooling sensation when I had used Henna initially almost a decade ago and had little knowledge. I went by the traditional method of making paste. Even I am prone to catching cold and had some blockage in my left ear when I started with Henna. But if you use herbal henna and follow a proper method the color develops with your own body heat and actually there is no cooling effect at all. No chemical hair color can every give you the buttery soft silky hair that you can get with Henna and Indigo. Henna drying out hair is a myth. It dries out hair only when you keep using harsh shampoos and also don't know how to take good care of your hair. In fact I was surprised that the number of Henna users abroad is much higher than in India. I had exactly the same thoughts on Henna before I made the shift. If you want to try, I can guide you on how to do a patch test and check if it cools your scalp.

Powder based hair colors may be stronger I feel because you just mix it in water and apply and that ways the chemicals get very very easily absorbed into the scalp. But they drip and are messy. Creme based hair colors don't drip and the application is comparatively easy. Other nourishing ingredients are added to the creme to make the coloring process less harsh. The quality is better and hence they are costlier.

As I have mentioned in the review above, this is actually a Type 2 (demi-permanent) hair color, meaning it is milder than permanent hair colors. If you use chemical based shampoos with silicones, your hair may have a silicon build up and may not take up mild colors easily. There could be many other factors why this or other chemical based hair colors may not be working effectively for you.

ReplyDeleteYou can use this hair color but make sure you do a patch test first. You can simply read the instructions on the pack or google search on how to do a patch test. At such a young age, you should use something safer and milder like henna and natural hair colors. Let me know if you need more info on that.

ReplyDeleteNo dear, I have stopped using chemical hair colors from more than 2 years now. I use Henna and Indigo to color my hair naturally and have just launched our own brand for these herbs.
DeleteTo answer your question, permanent hair colors do not return to your natural hair color on fading. They just go down the hair length as hair keep growing longer from the roots. So say you used a burgundy color on your hair, then the gray hair strands will have new gray hair growth from the roots and the colored part of those strands will remain as such... may be just become a little dull in color but not fade out/ wash out completely. Similarly, the ones which have your natural hair color will grow the same color from the roots and the colored part of the hair strand will go down further.
That said, permanent hair colors do increase graying within a few uses. You can read more about that in my other articles on hair colors under the 'Hair Care' tab above.

my mother had the same problem...she almost fainted after she used the godrej hair color...in black..but when i used the burgundy shade to dip dye..I had no problems.

ReplyDeleteAre you by any chance inspired by the comment right aboe yours ? :) Well it should work as a dip dye and as there won't be any direct contact with the scalp, there is no risk of side effects like I faced.
DeleteHowever, as mentioned in the article, this is a demi-permanent color and hence if you use a regular shampoo on your dip dyed hair, the color will wash out pretty fast. So you just need to use mild products on the colored area.

ReplyDeleteIt is totally your choice to use it Jane. Most people may not have any reaction at all on healthy scalp. As mentioned in the article, the ingredients list is identical for both black and brown shades so that should answer your question if the review is of a particular shade or applies to other shades too. You can try at your own risk. Since you have no grays, I wonder what your natural hair color is. As per the user experiences shared below in comments, the Dark Brown shade of Godrej Expert Rich Creme color may come out almost black on naturally black or brownish hair.
