L'Oreal Paris Dermo Expertise Gentle Lip and Eye Makeup Remover Review

L'Oreal Paris Dermo Expertise Gentle Lip and Eye Makeup Remover Review

L'Oreal Paris Dermo Expertise Gentle Lip and Eye Makeup Remover Review

I LOVE this makeup remover! Read on to know why :)

PRODUCT CLAIMS:

L'Oreal Paris GENTLE lip and eye-makeup remover is a unique formula which instantly removes the most tenacious eye and lip make-up, even waterproof. So gentle it is suitable for sensitive eyes.

L'Oreal Paris Dermo Expertise Gentle Lip and Eye Makeup Remover Review

Quantity: 125ml
Price: INR 425. I had bought for INR 403.75 but medplusbeauty.com has now removed the discount.
Shelf Life: 30 months
Availability: Easily available online, and offline in major cities.

Loreal GENTLE makeup remover price India

L'Oreal Dermo Expertise Gentle Lip and Eye Makeup Remover is a bi-phased makeup remover, meaning it has both water and oil, to effectively dissolve away and gently clean heavy and waterproof makeup. There are numerous similar makeup removers available in the market from various brands like Maybelline, L'Oreal, Neutrogena, Lakme absolute and premium brands like YSL, Lancome, Chanel and many more.

INGREDIENTS:

Loreal Gentle lip and eye makeup remover ingredients

Full ingredient list is present. Isopropyl Palmitate can be an irritant to some. I have very sensitive skin and it feels mild on the skin exactly like water.

WHY USE A MAKEUP REMOVER?

As you need a clean and even surfaced canvas to paint beautifully, you need a clear skin base to apply makeup and enhance your beauty. Therefore, while makeup helps you look good and increase your self esteem, it is equally important to clean that makeup before going to bed, so as to maintain a healthy canvas of skin to do makeup on every time.

If you do not clean your makeup properly every night, you may soon end up with endless skin problems and increased skin pore size.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH L'OREAL GENTLE LIP AND EYE MAKEUP REMOVER:

I was earlier using Biotique Bio Almond Oil makeup cleanser. While it was effective and had no chemicals, it was a time consuming regimen to follow on a daily basis. So I decided to buy this.

It made my life easy and I can now remove all Eye, Face and lip makeup within a few seconds, without any mess. This makeup remover did some magic. It leaves my lips baby soft and amazingly clean in a single swipe, it is so gentle! My lips no longer chap, which makes me think some chemical makeup residual was previously affecting my lips.

It needs 2-3 swipes to completely wipe off stubborn waterproof mascara, so I rest the lids against the cotton for a few seconds and it comes off immediately. It cleans waterproof eye pencil in a single swipe.

The blue oily layer floats on top of the white aqua layer. Like all bi-phased makeup removers, you need to first shake the bottle vigorously to activate the product (mix the white and the blue layers to bubble up).

This is how it looks on shaking and mixing the two layers
The two layers separate again after a few seconds, so you need to shake every time you want to take out more remover, which becomes a pain.

It leaves an oil-like non-greasy film on the face, which requires cleaning with cleansing milk or face wash. I simply wipe with a soft paper tissue and follow with Olay Foaming face wash which removes makeup residue. You can use any face wash or cleansing milk of your choice and not necessarily the L'Oreal Dermo Expertise GENTLE cleansing milk recommended on the bottle.
This is an important follow up step as some makeup residue may still be sitting on your face in that oily layer, especially in the case of foundations and dissolved mascara.

(L) Even the toughest Makeup is gone in 2-3 swipes with cotton ball dipped in makeup remover.

THE VERDICT:

Most bi-phased makeup removers have almost similar ingredients. Buy any that gives you good value for money for the quantity provided and has the least harmful chemicals. This one should last me quite long.

Biotique Bio Almond Oil Soothing Face and Eye Makeup Cleanser Review

This is a review of Biotique Bio Almond Oil: Soothing Face and Eye Makeup Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin.

Biotique Bio Almond Oil Soothing Face and Eye Makeup Cleanser Review

Quantity: 120 ml / 4.2 Fl Oz
Price: INR 149
Shelf Life: 3 Years. Since this is an ayurvedic formulation, there is no 'use within these many months of opening' limitation.
Easily available online and in pharmacies/drugstore.

Biotique Bio Almond Oil was the first 'official' makeup remover I had bought. I have it for almost 2 years now. I have hardly worn any makeup on face in the past few years, except eye makeup. So this bottle has lasted me really really long. Like most ayurvedic formulations, the color of the oil has darkened with time, but product quality is still the same.

Biotique Bio Almond Oil Makeup Remover for Oily to Dry Skin

The oil is dispensed through a hole in the mouth dart, but need to seal with cellotape while travelling, to prevent leakage. May easily spill.

PACKAGE DESCRIPTION AND CLAIMS:

I have thrown away the outer cardboard packing long back, but this is what the package description says "ALMONDS are the earliest and most nutritious of the entire world's nut crops, rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants. This soothing cleanser is blended with nourishing almond, safflower, sesame, neem and staff tree oils to dissolve heavy face and eye makeup easily and gently. Leaves skin silky-fresh."

Organically pure and preservative free
Dermatologist tested for safety
No animal testing

Biotique Bio Almond Makeup Remover

BIOTIQUE BIO ALMOND OIL INGREDIENTS:

Biotique Bio Almond Makeup Remover Ingredients
Even though it is named bio almond oil and the goodness of almonds is asserted on the pack, it is actually a blend of a few essential oils, majorly castor oil, in the base of sesame oil (as you can see in the pic above). Almond Oil is more of a motivational ingredient, which is just used as a marketing strategy to motivate people to buy it under the impression of an almond based oil.

Kusumbhi (Carthamus Tinctorius) = False Saffron or Safflower Seed Oil 3ml
Arandi (Ricinus communis) = Castor Oil 32.4 ml
Neem (Melia Azadirachta) 2.16ml
Soya (Anethum Sowa) 18ml
Badam (Prunus amygdalus) = Almond Oil 3.6ml
Surajmukhi (Helianthus Annuus) = Sunflower Oil 14.94 ml
Malakanguni (Celastrus Paniculata) = Black Oil plant or Intellect tree 0.9ml
Til Tail (Sesame Indicum) Q.S.

Biotique Bio Almond Face and Eye Makeup Remover

Smells a little like castor oil but I also smell some sweet notes very similar to the Biotique Nyctanthes Hand Cream.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH BIOTIQUE BIO ALMOND OIL MAKEUP REMOVER

I have started using face makeup from last year. It easily dissolves heavy face and eye makeup with gentle rubbing, without making much effort. Even though it feels heavy while rubbing in, surprisingly it is a very very light oil, without any stickiness. It effectively removes even waterproof and water resistant makeup. Does not drip, does not create any mess while removing makeup. Skin feels really clean, moisturized, soothed and soft after washing. Leaves a cool sensation on the skin, which I really enjoy.
Biotique Bio Almond Face and Eye Makeup Remover Review
1.Revlon Colorstay Lip Pencil
2. Chambor Stay-on Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil
3. Maybelline Color Stay 18 hr lip gloss
4. Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse Foundation
5. Viviana Fiesty Fairy Lipstick
ALL HEAVY DUTY MAKEUP
Biotique Bio Almond Oil dissolves heavy Face and Eye Makeup
It completely melted away everything except 4 and 5.
But then it never claimed to remove heavy duty lip makeup
HOW TO USE BIOTIQUE FACE AND EYE MAKEUP REMOVER

The instructions tell you to apply on damp cotton or washcloth and wipe, but I  find this method a little harsh on my skin. Moreover, you would like to clean any makeup residue in the remaining oil on the face.

I rather take some oil in my palm and gently rub into the skin (just like cream) to dissolve face makeup. For eye makeup, I rub around and on the lash roots with my pinky/smallest finger and let the oil work for a few seconds. You need to be careful lest you may end up with the molten eyeliner or mascara residue getting into your eyes, or blurred vision due to oil.

Then I wipe with a soft paper tissue and follow it with Olay Natural White foaming Cleanser, which removes all the residual makeup effectively.

You can use any good face wash to remove the oil and it gets washed out easily.

That's it. Apply a toner to close the cleansed skin pores.

Even though this cleanser is for Normal to Dry skin, people with Oily skin can also use it, as the oil is not heavy and as long as you wash it out with a good face wash.

A very very affordable chemical-free makeup remover and especially good during cold weather.

Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel in No 13 Bikini Paillete (Review, Nail Swatches)

Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel 13 Bikini Paillete is a gorgeous Fuchsia color glitter nail paint. It looks more magenta in warm light (sunlight, bulb light, natural light, with flash etc) and more purplish in cool light (tube light, without flash etc).  The shade looks darker in the bottle but comes out much brighter on nails. It is quite a bridal shade for Indian brides collection and also great to be worn during the festival season. A very pretty winter shade.

Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel 13 Bikini Paillete Review

Packaging: The nail polish bottle cap is really long and the brush is small and fan-shaped, which is the specialty of this nail paint. The cap is textured on both sides for a better no-slip grip. Color of the cap exactly matches the color of the nail paint, so much so, I can also see the fuchsia and blue micro glitters in the cap's plastic. Impressive packing!

Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel 13 Bikini Paillete is loaded with micro glitters which shine as fuchsia, purple and blue. Strangely, when you remove this nail paint, only the color comes off in the cotton swab and you see a layer of silver glitter left on the nails. This requires a second round of cleaning.

In the pics, I have applied a transparent base coat (Colorbar), two coats of Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel 13 Bikini Paillete, and then a transparent top coat.

Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Enamel 13 Bikini Paillete Review and On Nails

Here's a close up of the glitters
It stayed 36 hours on my nails with two baths and laundry and a hundred hand washes and started fading from the tips by the end of 2nd day. There was one small chip after 24 hours. It didn't smudge and was not messy. If you don't expose your hands so much to water and detergent, it will safely stay longer on your nails.

It has the typical strong nail polish smell. The Fan brush helps in covering each nail in just a single stroke. So the brand claim is quite valid here. It does dry in less than 1 min, which is what I really loved, because I do not have the patience to wait while my nail paint dries.

I personally found that the fan brush works better and the polish dries quicker without the base and top coats.

Products and Expiry dates: All you need to know

How many of us care to check the expiration date on products before buying them? While some like me are quite particular (almost finicky) about these dates, I know a majority of people including many of my own family members, who never care about such things. It just doesn’t come to them naturally. My particularity at times shocks the people around me. Knowing how products are stored and handled in India, I think I am doing the right thing.

Expiry date, shelf life, best before date, use by date difference

The expiration date, shelf life, Use by date, best before dates etc are just a guideline based on expected handling and proper storage of a product. While these are generally taken at face value, please note that these dates DO NOT guarantee the safety/goodness of a product within these time values. A lot depends on how they are stored: temperature, humidity, direct contact with sunlight, re-freezing a melted food product etc etc. A product may go bad much before its expiration date, while another may be quite safe to use even past the mentioned date.

Expiration date and shelf life are used synonymously, but are they the same? The answer is NO. Surprised?

SHELF LIFE/BEST BEFORE DATE:

As the name says, shelf life = time spent by a product on the shelf in a shop, until it is bought and opened by the customer. Shelf life is related to the quality of a product. This means, after the shelf life, the product’s quality/effectiveness reduces, though it may still be good/safe to use. Again, this holds true only if the products are stored in the proper storage conditions as mentioned on the packaging for most products (personal care, cosmetics, medicines, food items etc).

Product expiry dates, use by date, shelf life and best before dates
Food Storage Conditions mentioned on the pack
In case of food, the shelf life is specified by the ‘Best Before’ date.  This means, under proper storage conditions, a food item may still be good to use after the ‘Best before’ date, though it’s quality may have come down in terms of taste, nutritional value, color, appearance, texture etc.

For example, the normal white or brown bread available in the market has a use by date of 4-5 days from the date of packing. Many times, I have seen fungus on just a 2 days old bread. This is because shopkeepers in India mostly display such food items on racks, out in the scorching heat and humidity, which makes the bread ‘sweat’ and go rancid. So in this case, the product is still within the shelf life, but has been spoilt due to poor storage conditions. On the other hand, a fresh bread bought directly from the bakery, or picked up early morning on the day it was just delivered, can survive months if sealed properly in a good plastic bag and frozen. Similarly, eggs stored in the refrigerator can be used even a few days after the best before date, though it’s flavour/nutritional value may have decreased.

EXPIRY / USE BY DATE:

Expiration date is related to the product safety. NEVER use products after the expiration date as they are NOT SAFE to be consumed after the expiration date. In terms of food, expiration date is mentioned as ‘Use by’ date. The ingredients of such food items usually go rancid quickly and may be dangerous to eat after the Use by date.

Food items are usually affected by microorganisms which may lead to food poisoning or more serious conditions if consumed after the expiry date. This is particularly true of bread spreads, cheese, sandwich spreads, dressings etc.

I have seen people blindly buying big packs of fruit juices especially when they are at some discount in stores like Big Bazaar. Under heat and humidity, the fruit juice ferments easily and the packet swells due to the released gases that stay within the closed container. NEVER buy a fluffed up fruit juice packing as it is hazardous to your health and may cause food poisoning. Fermentation makes it equivalent to the ‘desi’ liquor brewed illegally which kills several hundreds every year. In case of medicines though, most pill forms are safe to be used even after the expiry date, it’s just that their effectiveness reduces.

SHELF LIFE GUIDELINES FOR COSMETICS AND TOILETRIES

Make up and personal care items usually have these date guidelines indicated through the picture of an open tub with a number inside it (see the first pic). The number indicates months. This means, once you open the packaging, use the product within those many months. Only a very small percentage of people understand or ever notice this indication. I have seen most people (including beauty specialists at saloons and other people with a very high knowledge of makeup) keep using their makeup items till the expiry date mentioned on them.

A product may have a shelf life/expiry date of 3 yrs from packing, but once you open it, use it only within the number of months mentioned in the open tub picture. You can go a little beyond this timeline if you store your products as per guidelines, in very good storage conditions. But do not keep using a Kajal or Eyeliners for 3 yrs. Your eyes are more precious than the money you spent on those cosmetics.

Product expiry dates, use by date, shelf life and best before dates
Open Tub graphic indication of usage period after opening

SOME BASIC TIPS TO INCREASE THE USAGE LIFE OF YOUR PRODUCTS:
  1. Never dilute shampoos by directly putting water into the shampoo bottle (a very common practice in India). If you like to use your shampoo diluted, dilute it in a separate mug.
  2. Never take out conditioner from the tub packing with your wet hands.
  3. Keep your makeup items in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
  4. Most people carry around eye makeup like Kajal/ liner pencil for touch up during functions and quickly do that with dirty hands. Always wash your hands properly/sanitize before starting to apply makeup, when at home or outside.
  5. Clean the dust off your makeup/toiletry bottles with a clean cloth regularly.
  6. Never leave the lids or covers of makeup/toiletries open unnecessarily.
  7. Avoid touching the tip of eye pencils/Kajals with your hands.
  8. DO NOT share lipsticks, eye makeup, makeup sponges etc.
  9. Once you have opened an item, discard it after you have reached the number of months mentioned in the tub, even if you have used it once or twice. Particularly in case of eye pencils and lipsticks. Lipsticks may still survive longer if stored properly in the fridge.
  10. Always check the date on an item before buying.
  11. Never pour contact lens solution from the bigger bottle into the small sample bottle. Such products may change chemically upon coming in contact with light/air.
  12. In case of food items, always check the storage conditions before buying from a shop/store. Most shop keepers switch off their freezers at night and then switch them on next morning. This adversely affects food items while poor/ignorant customers never suspect this.
I hope this information is helpful and you are welcome to add more information or your valuable comments in the comments section below.

LORD & BERRY Mascare Black 1350 Review

This is a review for LORD & BERRY Mascare High Definition and Treatment - Black 1350. Other names: Lord & Berry Mascare eyelash code 1350, Lord & Berry treatment mascara, Lord & Berry Wardrobe Mascara. The 1350 variation is available only in India. Internationally, 1351 is available as the wardrobe mascara. I am not sure of the difference.

I wanted to do this review for a long time, but had mixed feelings for this product. I didn’t find ANY reviews for it, when I bought it. But I have now used it extensively. So this review is as honest as can be.

Product
Black Treatment Mascara for sensitive eyes
Quantity
10ml / 0.34 FL OZ
Price
INR 890 (Not mentioned on the package). Available for Rs 699 at urbantouch.com.
Shelf Life
Not mentioned on the pack. To be used within 6 months of opening.
Make
Made in Italy
Package Description
LORD & BERRY treatment mascara enriched with LXB Complex. Opthalmologically tested, for sensitive eyes. MASCARE: High definition, Volume and Treatment.
Details mentioned on online store
Lord & Berry Mascare Black 1350 is supremely soft and creamy texture. Never gets smudgy or blurry. Magically seals in 30 seconds. Long-lasting and water-resistant. Opthalmologically tested and safe for sensitive eyes.

Lord & Berry is an Italian brand in business since 1992 and is presently selling in 25 countries. I first saw this brand on goodlife.com, when searching for a black waterproof mascara. I actually wanted to buy their Raincoat Waterproof mascara, but that went out of stock on goodlife.com. I needed one for an upcoming party, so bought this water-resistant alternative from urbantouch.com.

UNIQUE QUALITIES CLAIMED BY THE BRAND:

MASCARE is a holistic approach to mascara that strengthens and treats lashes, as well as enhances their volume, definition and length. It is infused with Silk Proteins, Panthenol and Vitamin E to keep lashes fit. Black metallic pigments give colour, both light reflecting and defining. Mascare is an ‘Eyelash Spa’: healing and beautifying lashes simultaneously.

MY TAKE ON THESE CLAIMS:

High Definition: Somewhat, makes lashes look black and long.
Volume: NO Volume.
Treatment: Not sure. But it does not make lashes hard like other mascaras.
Opthalmologically tested and for sensitive eyes: Though the formula itself doesn’t sting, it withers off in very small black particles (highlighted in the pic below in pink stars) which at times get into the eyes and cause irritation.

It takes a while to master applying this mascara as the tip of the wand is unusually long, and needs a lot of precision to handle. I have usually seen women craning their neck forward near the mirror and opening their eyes WIDE open to apply mascara. But if you do that with this mascara, you will only end up with a lot of black mess around your eyes.

HOW TO APPLY?

This mascara has a very particular way of applying it, especially if you have long lashes. Have you ever watched eye makeup being applied to models on TV? Well, that’s how this and any other mascara should be applied to get well defined highlighted lashes, without straining your eyes, neck and hand.

For the upper eyelashes: tilt the head back and look down. Apply starting from the roots and sweeping towards the tips.
For the lower eyelashes: tilt the head forward and look up.

Lord & Berry Mascara 1350 with black withering particles highlighted in stars.
THE PLUSES:
  1. Smell: Very light soothing sweet natural scent. No perfume.
  2. Very pigmented. Gives a RICH black color to lashes.
  3. Gives impression of lengthening.
  4. Seals in quickly.
  5. Comes off simply with a splash of water into my eyes, without even a hint of burning. But you do need to clean the blackness from your face in that case.
THE MINUSES:
  1. No volume, some definition to the lashes and yet a very big price tag. It is sold as water resistant and still costlier than the leading waterproof mascaras in the Indian market.
  2. The packaging is full of flaws: The tube is not straight. There is a gap in the tube and the brush part (See pic below), which lets dust and air to enter. The bottle doesn’t stand and keeps falling. No expiry/mfg date or MRP mentioned.
  3. Forget Eye Spa, I find broken lashes on my cheeks after removing, almost every time.
  4. The black metallic particles in the formula keep withering off and settle on under eye and cheeks. Need to be brushed off every couple of hours. They also get into eyes at times and irritate them.
  5. Not water resistant. Comes off easily in a splash of water and leaves panda eyes.
  6. The tip of the wand being extra long, dirties the upper eyelids. So if you are using this along with eye shadow and other makeup, you need to redo the eyeshadow and eyeliner after the mascara. Too much effort.
  7. Most cosmetics have to be used within 12 months from opening and this one has to be used just within 6 months.

THE FINAL VERDICT:

This mascara is nothing but plain black ink for your lashes with a very high price tag. If you just some rub petroleum jelly into your lashes, they will look equally black and shiny. It is a complete waste of money. When I look into the mirror, the lashes look highlighted. But caught on the camera, it is like you are not wearing mascara at all. As you can see in the ‘Before and After’ pic below, the lashes look the same in the two except for a little blacker in the pic with the mascara.

Do I recommend? No.
Will I buy again? Never. It was a mistake to buy this.

Can anyone recommend a good black waterproof volumising mascara?

Sally Hansen Maximum Growth plus Nail Polish Review

This is a review for Sally Hansen MAXIMUM GROWTH plus nourishing nail color with Vitamins A,C,E and Soy Protein. I am going to particularly review two colors: Profound Pink (a peach shade) and Sacred Scarlet (blood red), but I believe the rest of the colors in this range would be the same quality.

Product
Nail treatment Nail Polish
Price
Current price Rs 425 for 13.3 ml/0.45oz (I had bought for Rs 375 each, 2 years ago)
Smell
Strong smell of spirit
Shelf life
36 months/3 yrs from export date
Make
Made in USA
Brand Claims
Sally Hansen Maximum Growth Plus Nail Color is the first nail polish with vitamin technology.
  • Patented formula hydrates and conditions.
  • Soy Protein strengthens and fortifies nails.
  • No DBP, Toluene or Free Formaldehyde.

Read on to know what this so called 'leading mega brand of nail treatment and color' has to offer.

I admit I am not a nail polish addict. I appreciate beautifully painted nails but I just don’t have the patience to sit and wait for my nail paint to dry. If ever I wear nail polish, I go for the ones that dry quickly and there are many available in the market now. Two years ago, I discovered my foot’s thumb nail had suddenly broken in one corner - not the grown part of the nail, but the actual pinkish part that has skin beneath it. I tried to file it, protect it, used creams, but nothing worked. It would just break every few weeks.

I was buying some other stuff and the sales assistant suggested me this nail paint. I told her I don’t maintain long nails as mine break very easily, and she said this is a nail treatment and it will strengthen my nails to ensure really good growth. The price was towards the higher side, but she convinced me to buy two. I bought these two:

Sally Hansen MAXIMUM GROWTH plus nourishing nail color with Vitamins A,C,E and Soy ProteinSacred Scarlet (L) and Profound Pink (R)

How I wish they were actually as beautiful as they look in those glass bottles! This is the worst nail polish I have ever tried and in these last 2+ years I have just cursed the sales assistant every time I have tried to wear these nail paints.

THE PLUSES:

Shamefully, NONE!

It was a bad decision to buy these and a complete waste of money when I could have gotten the best nail polish in that amount. Here are some pictures for you to judge:

I applied a single coat and checked after 2 minutes of waiting under the fan. This is what happened to my ring finger upon touching.

The tallest finger looks neat in the above pic due to flash, but this is how it actually came out:

After 10 minutes, the nail polish is still not dry. I touched my thumb to check and it comes off like sticky bubble gum. Can you also see the lines in the area where the nail polish is still intact?

THE MINUSES:
  1. Even though the brush is quite long, which should mean neat nail paint application, this one gives you only textured nails and nail paint all around the skin. The brush does not evenly distribute nail polish on the nail. I could NEVER achieve a single neat application despite how much patience or precision I used.
  2. The color of the nail paint is very pretty in itself, but the consistency is BAD. When you take out the brush, it is too full of the paint. If you wipe off the excess nail paint against the bottle’s neck, you cannot paint even half of a nail. And if you try to paint with more nail polish on the brush, it just runs down to the edges and the brush leaves lines in the center.
  3. The nail paint does not dry even after 10 min of waiting arrrgghhhhhh!!!
  4. Finally when it dries, you will have nails that look like you have applied nail polish for the first time in your life. All clumsy, chipped and dirty.
  5. If ever you happen to get a better application, it does not stay for more than a day. No value for your time and effort.
  6. As if all this is not enough, it is quite a job to remove these nail paints. The Sacred Scarlet (Red one) just won’t leave your nails after cleaning them even thrice with a good nail paint remover. The other one (Profound Pink) has glitters, and glitter nail paints again take a lot to clean up.
  7. Forget growth, it didn’t strengthen my nails at all. The foot thumb nail kept breaking.
Will I buy again? NEVER

Despite all the rave about this brand and the various nail paints it offers, I am done with it. I would never recommend this brand to anyone.
